and the united states if it weren't for the excessive regulation of the obama administration. for example, states have worked in conjunction with the federal government for 40 years to manage forest roads and prevent pollution with state-managed best practices. this partnership has proven effective and provided regulatory certainty for many decades. unfortunately, president obama's e.p.a. wants to impose a nationwide standard, giving them the complete regulatory authority over an industry that supports nearly three million workers and contributes $115 billion to our economy each year. under this standard, the e.p.a. will be able to shut down businesses that don't comply with their arbitrary and misguided rules. states that have a 40-year track record of effectively regulating these roads and we should let them continue for at least another 40. to take another example, the e.p.a.'s new boiler rule demonstrates this administration's preference for ideology over sound economics and business sense. with compliance costs in excess of $3 billion and 105,000 jobs threatened, this rule inflicts unnecessa

, and they have at the most popular politician in the country behind their back. president obama said he is ready to work with them. notably he and former president bill clinton had become more eager to get ahead, more progressive, vs senate democrats. you've got to be ready to compromise a little bit with the other elements of congress in the coming months. you are going to have defections when it comes to gun control, immigration, and what we may have to do with a fiscal policy. host: you touch on that point, an unlikely ally for house democrats, the speaker of the house, john boehner. guest: that is something that many democrats have pointed out. he made -- he may need them to get some of these bills passed. as he did with the debt ceiling vote. as he did with the bill for hurricane sandy victims. as it came with the fiscal cliff agreement. i see that as a possibility with a gun control and immigration, because while republicans cannot be eager and willing to discuss the issues, pulling suggest that the house may have to pass something. i will meet democrats. host: -- they will need democrats.

jump over. last month when president obama was sworn into his second term, i was reminded of something he said four years ago in his first inauguration. the president said, "the question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small but whether it works, whether it helps families finds a job at a decent wage, care they can afford or retirement that is dignified." what we have seen from this president is reckless spending and a heavy hand in regulation. at the time of the president's first inauguration, the unemployment rate was 7.8%. at the time of his second inauguration, it was exactly the same and this month unemployment rose to 7.9%. while the rate of unemployment has been mostly stagnant, the national debt has not. in the past four years of failed obama policies, the nation has added $6 trillion of new debt onto the backs of citizens and businesses. today our national debt stands at $16.4 trillion, broken down by american citizens, that's $52,210 for every man, woman and child in this country. we must get back on the right track and bring optimism into busines

in the house gop is drafting a plan to give president obama disk -- discretion on these cuts. guest: right, we have heard the same from senate republicans. the argument from republicans, with this discretion matter, which has been floating around over the last week or two, is to say that the administration has been saying that the way the law was worded to set up a sequestration, they have a very limited flexibility in how they can implement it. they have to take furloughs in lots of places that would seem to be mission critical. secretary lahood is talking about shutting down air traffic control towers at smaller airports there will be long waits at psa -- at tsa with fewer screeners. what republicans in both chambers are trying to do is perhaps come up with some way to be able to give the administration more flexibility, which is also perhaps politically useful, because there is this whole notion of firing first, where they put cuts in affect and tout cuts in places where people will feel them. there was some reporting last night about people in immigration detention centers perhaps being le
